Bowlers third at Hoosier Classic

Feb. 21, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Vanderbilt’s bowling team sits third on a tightly bunched leader board as the huge field turns for the stretch run today at the Hoosier Classic, annually billed as the largest collegiate tournament in the nation.

After six team games that concluded about 11:30 (ET) last night, defending champion Central Florida has an 88 pin lead on the field of nearly 50 with Pikeville nestled in second 31 pins ahead of the Commodores.

While Josie Earnest and Brittni Hamilton had big days to sit in second and seventh places individually, the rest of the Black and Gold lineup was up and down.

“Other than Game 5, I thought we did all right in a general sense,” Coach John Williamson said Sunday morning. “It is apparent when you look at our game scores that we couldn’t get all five flowing together. If we’re going to do something here we will need five bowlers executing at the same time.

“The top teams have excellent players,” Williamson continues. “Our problems last night were more mental than physical. The lanes changed in the fifth game and we were lost for four or five frames until we were able to adjust.”

“Josie and Brittni were really strong,” Williamson noted. “Josie is just 19 pins out of first after five excellent games.”

There are three more team games set for about 12:45 (ET) today. The field gets cut to the top eight and Baker match play (best of five) starts at 4:00 with the top seed facing the eighth seed and so forth. The championship match could start about 7:00.

Complete tournament results are found on bowl.com. There will be no live streaming of women’s action Sunday.
