Bowlers take lead in Delaware

Nov. 22, 2008

MILLSBORO, Del. — Vanderbilt rebounded from one of its weaker team game efforts in quite some time to grab the lead after two days of the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawk Classic.

The Commodores went just 4-2 on the day but own an 83-pin lead over second place Kutztown heading into Sunday’s final action with Delaware State 410 pins back in third place.

Sunday’s finale format has been changed to six 4-game Baker sets after it was learned that not all competing teams had been informed of the proposed bracket play. The Commodores will play both Kutztown and Delaware State in addition to four other foes Sunday.

Scores were inconsistent on this day as Vanderbilt worked to keep focus while carrying the favorites tag. After opening with a win over Cheney University, the wheels came off in the second game and the No. 2 rated Black and Gold were upset by Bethune-Cookman by 27 pins.

“The lanes were changing and we wanted our team to move with the change,” Coach John Williamson related. “But they didn’t buy into the advice quickly enough and the result was one of our flattest efforts in a long time. That was very disappointing for all of us.

“We got on them a bit at that point and they responded,” Williamson continued. “We bowled very well the last four matches. We lost by one pin to Sacred Heart but it was well played in every way. I give credit to Sacred Heart for bowling a great game.”

Individual scoring was not released (apparently so that tomorrow’s all-tournament team willaar be a surprise) but Michelle Peloquin will likely be amongst the leaders along with Josie Earnest.

Peloquin was the most consistent `Dore on the day, averaging 205.5 with no game under 191. Earnest shook off an opening 164 with five strong games to average 203 and Amanda Halter came in for two games to average 209.

Vanderbilt is now 22-5 for the season.
