WARRENSBURG, Mo. — A lineup dominated by newcomers got its feet wet in collegiate bowling today and in the process, Vanderbilt won two Baker games and lost two others.
“Four of our six players had a total of 16 collegiate games before today so the inconsistency we saw was probably typical,” said Coach John Williamson. “It’s been quite a while since we fielded a team this green. There seemed to be a lot of nerves and it was apparent we were trying to force things instead of letting them happen. As a result, we had an afternoon of ups and downs.”
The No. 2 rated Commodores opened with a win over Elmhurst but ran into a buzz saw against host Central Missouri, sizzling on its home lanes. The Jennies posted four of five games over 211 – opening with a 266 – to win 1,090-979.
Arkansas State topped the Black and Gold in the third match, 989-928 while Vandy came back to win the fourth game of the day against Minnesota-Mankato. There was a fifth round in which Vanderbilt had a bye and with the pressure off, the young ‘Dores notched a 1,007 that included a 275.
The Commodores used six women in their Friday rotation: veterans Josie Earnest and Brittni Hamilton, junior Amanda Halter, transfer Kayla Rhoades and freshmen Kim Carper and Jessica Earnest.
The action moves to Springfield tomorrow and the Enterprise Park Lanes for the actual tournament, which concludes Sunday. In addition to today’s foes, others competing will be Louisiana Tech, Southern, Stephen F. Austin, Valparaiso, Elmhurst and Nebraska.
