Bowlers second after 5-1 day

Nov. 21, 2008

MILLSBORO, Del. — Vanderbilt was in a tight battle for first place in total pin fall after the first day of Maryland-Eastern Shore’s Hawk Classic.

Delaware State holds a two pin lead over the Commodores and four pin advantage over Fairleigh Dickinson heading into the traditional team games tomorrow.

The Commodores defeated host MES, Fairleigh Dickinson, Adelphi, Bowie State and Howard before losing a high scoring match to New Jersey City in the 5-game Baker sets.

“This seemed very much like our first tournament at FDU,” Coach John Williamson said. “The lanes played different than we anticipated and we struggled early in the day before we picked it up and started bowling very well. We’ll make some adjustments and be fine tomorrow.”

The match with NJC was hotly contested. The Gothic Knights were coming off games of 806, 858 and 805 but were ready for the Commodores, unleashing four efforts over 200 including a 269 gem in the second game that essentially was the difference in the 1,050-1,029 final score.

Total pin fall from Friday and Saturday will determine seeds for bracket play Sunday, which will determine the team champion.

Vanderbilt improves its record to 16-3 and is looking for its third straight title at this event.

Participating programs include Adelphi, Bethune-Cookman, Bowie State, Cheyney, Delaware State, Elizabeth City, FDU, Hampton, Howard, Kutztown, Long Island, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Morgan State, New Jersey City, North Carolina Central, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis, St. Paul’s and Vanderbilt.
