Bowlers lose Big Red lead

Nov. 6, 2009

LINCOLN, Neb. — An inconsistent day of team games saw Vanderbilt slip into second place behind Central Missouri at the Big Red Invite. The Commodores trail the Jennies by 40 pins heading into Saturday’s finale.

The Commodores won four of five games but in this event, total pin fall determines the champion. There were peaks and valleys.

“We made many of the same mistakes today that we made yesterday,” said Coach John Williamson. “We didn’t make enough good shots to deserve the lead.”

University of Nebraska transfer Kayla Rhoades returned to her old stomping grounds wearing Black and Gold and provided her new Vanderbilt team with a big boost.

Rhoades blitzed her familiar Sun Valley Lanes with games of 253-235-168-206-182 to pace the Commodores. The redshirt sophomore leads all individuals at this halfway point with teammates Brittni Hamilton fourth and Josie Earnest sixth.

“Kayla was pretty consistent through the afternoon,” Williamson noted. “She threw a big one (253) in the opener and that gave her confidence. I thought Ashley Belden also did a good job when she got into the lineup.”

The Commodores opened the afternoon by dispatching Elmhurst, setting up a quick meeting with top-rated and tourney host Nebraska. Vanderbilt was in command the entire game behind Rhoades’ strong bowling and Josie Earnest’s steady 204.

The ‘Dores then ran into a hot-scoring Central Missouri unit and compounded their problem with an uneven effort, losing 977-901. They followed that with wins over Valparaiso, posting their best total of the day, and Prairie View, with their weakest game of the afternoon, to end the day.

Five team games are in store tomorrow. Live scoring is available on Nebraska’s bowling web page.
