MILLSBORO, DE – Vanderbilt’s bowlers dominated the individual standings and are leading 18 other teams at the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Classic after the first day of competition. The Commodores cruised through five team games undefeated and have a 137 pin lead on second place Fairleigh Dickinson.
“This was our best collective day to date,” said Coach John Williamson. “We placed four women in the top 11 and a fifth – Josie Earnest – actually averaged more than the first place finisher but we wanted to substitute and she didn’t have enough games to qualify individually. The lanes were a sport-shot condition, not an easy pattern, so I was pleased with another very steady day – very consistent. I liked the fact that even though we were in some lop-sided contests we kept our focus and didn’t let down.”
Tara Kane led the fourth-rated Commodores by placing third with Karen Grygiel fourth, Mandy Keily seventh and Michelle Peloquin 11th. Keily was coming off last week’s individual title at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Earnest averaged a strong 197 for four games, two pins better than the actual winner but was substituted one game.
The tournament concludes tomorrow with five Baker games. The final standings will be determined by adding today’s team pin fall to the Baker totals. Vanderbilt has the opportunity to face Sacred Heart, FDU and host Maryland-Eastern Shore among its five Sunday foes.
