11/20/2005 MILLSBORO, DE—Vanderbilt’s bowling team went over the .500 mark for the first time Saturday by winning five of six matches at the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic. The Commodores defeated a pair of 2005 NCAA Tournament teams in the process with only a narrow loss to traditional power Sacred Heart keeping the young squad from a perfect day. Tara Kane had an excellent outing with games of 248 and 213 over the sport shot lanes to finish the individual standings in sixth place in the field of over 100 bowlers. “I thought we had a good day,” Coach John Williamson said. “We got off to a bit of a slow start when we lost by 13 pins to Sacred Heart but we had quality victories over tournament teams New Jersey City and Maryland-Eastern Shore. Our fans may not realize it but college bowling has been pretty much dominated by teams from the northeast in the past.” Vanderbilt is in fourth place in the 19-team field, about 400 pins behind Farleigh Dickinson. Tomorrow’s Baker Games could possibly see the Commodores climb higher in the standings. The Commodores are now 16-13 on the season.
