Bowlers Fourth, Peloquin First at Mankato

11/12/2005

MANKATO, MN—Vanderbilt’s bowling team had one of its best days to date Saturday by winning two of its four matches and averaging nearly 1000 pins in Minnesota State’s Maverick Challenge. The Commodores topped Central Missouri State and Wisconsin-Whitewater while losing to Nebraska and Arkansas State.

Freshman Michelle Peloquin continued her outstanding play by averaging 233 over the four games to lead all tournament bowlers. Karen Grygiel, a freshman, had her best day with a 209 average while a third freshman, Kaitlin Reynolds, was at 207. Peloquin leads the individual standings by a 14 pin average.

“We bowled much better today,” said Coach John Williamson. “We averaged nearly 1000 a game and were generally doing much better picking up spares. Karen seemed to trust herself a lot more and finally bowled the way we know she is capable of bowling, which gave us a big boost. Our win against Central Missouri in the last game of the day was also a good one; it was tied going into the tenth frame and they don’t get a lot closer than that.”

The day began with Vanderbilt losing by just nine pins, 1,013-1,004, to the same Arkansas State team it had beaten last night by three pins.

Peloquin led the was at 233 with Grygiel having her best game as a Commodore (220) and Tara Kane checking in at 217. Nebraska topped the Commodores in Game 2 by a 1,070-961 score despite a 235 effort from Reynolds and a 205 from Grygiel.

Vanderbilt had its second highest point total of the young season in beating Wisconsin-Whitewater, 1,037 — 842. Peloquin led the way with a hefty 260 and Reynolds was close behind at 236.

In the close fourth game, the Commodores won 980-970 with Peloquin’s 247 and Grygiel’s 219 topping the winners.

Vanderbilt stood fourth in the tourney standings with the 2-2 Saturday record, although it is second in total pin fall to Nebraska. The tournament continues Sunday with two team games and a series of Baker games to determine team standings.
