Bowlers finish third at Hawk Classic

Nov. 18, 2012

MILLSBORO, Del. — Vanderbilt capped an up tempo tournament performance with a third place finish at the Hawk Classic.

Led by veterans Jessica Earnest and Natalie Goodman, the Commodores opened the day by defeating Fairleigh Dickinson, 4 games to 2, to advance to the tournament semifinals. Host Maryland-Eastern Shore edged by Vanderbilt, 4-3, sending the Dores to the consolation finals where they would once again top FDU by the identical 4-2 margin.

“I thought we bowled fairly well here,” Coach John Williamson said. “We had our chances to win against UMES but made some unforced mistakes at inopportune times. For instance, we dropped Game 4 by two pins and there were several places we could have found a couple of pins in that game.

“Putting it into some perspective,” Williamson continued, “a week ago we bowled ourselves out of a chance to win on Sunday and today we were in the thick of things. We are moving in the right direction.”

Vanderbilt used a rotation of Amanda Fry, Nicole Mosesso, Natalie Goodman, Robyn Renslow and Jessica Earnest throughout its Sunday Bakers.

Freshman Amanda Fry made the all-tournament team, the first in her college career.

UMES defeated Central Missouri to win its own tournament. Vanderbilt’s next action comes Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at Sam Houston State’s Track Kat Clash.
