JONESBORO, Ark. — Vanderbilt’s bowlers finished seventh at the Mid-Winter Classic Sunday, losing twice before finishing on a winning note.

It was a disappointing weekend for the eighth-rated Commodores, who experienced one of the lowest tournament finishes in program history. Vanderbilt dropped games to Stephen F. Austin and McKendree before shutting out Valparaiso to end the day.

“We generally threw better shots today but we couldn’t get over the hump in the first two games,” said Coach John Williamson. “There seemed to be a variety of factors this weekend that included our own lack of consistency, focus and sometimes just plain tough bowling luck. We will get back to campus and work hard to iron some things out.”

Vanderbilt used a Baker rotation of Nicole Mosseso, Amanda Fry, Natalie Goodman, Giselle Poss and Robyn Renslow most of the day. Williamson said Nicole Channin gave the team a good spark in the win over Valparaiso.

The Commodores won’t have much time to figure things out as they leave for Reading, Pa., late in the week for the Kutztown Invitational Friday through Sunday.

Host Arkansas State beat Sam Houston State for the tournament championship.
