Bowlers Finish Fourth at Morgan State

Feb. 18, 2007

BEL AIR, MD – Vanderbilt’s bowling team had an up and down day at the Morgan State Invitational Sunday and finished the event fourth in a field of 24. The Commodores went 3-2 on the day, pushing their season record to 54-12.

Freshman Josie Earnest led Vanderbilt bowlers with a fourth place individual finish on the strength of a 210.8 average over five team games with sophomores Karen Grygiel (210.4) and Tara Kane (202.6) not far behind in fifth and 12th place, respectively. Nebraska’s All-American Amanda Burgoyne of the tourney champion Cornhuskers won individually, averaging 230.

For the second ranked Commodores, it was another tournament this spring in which things were not quite clicking on all cylinders.

“We had some good moments,” said Coach John Williamson, “but basically we were too inconsistent. We let the Fairleigh Dickinson game slip away from us and while Adelphi earned the victory, to be honest it was disappointing not to win that game. FDU is a strong team that caught fire at the end and you can’t play defense in bowling. We just need to get in a position where somebody getting hot late doesn’t get us beat.”

The bowlers are back in action March 3-4 at Alabama A & M’s Holiday Classic.
