Bowlers Entering Stretch Run

3/3/2006

Vanderbilt’s bowling team is back in action this weekend, this time traveling to the Birmingham suburb of Bessemer for Alabama A & M’s annual Holiday Classic. The Commodores (37-26) carry a No. 7 national rank into the event, which has 16 competing teams.

“We are entering the stretch run of the season,” says Coach John Williamson. “The tournaments in March are no more or no less important than any prior competition we have had in the eyes of the committee that will ultimately select the eight teams that reach the NCAA finals. However, when your team is in the hunt for Houston (NCAA Championships), finishing strong is significant.”

The Commodores have this event, their own Columbia 300 Music City Classic March 18-19 and the Brunswick Windy City Invitational in Chicago at the end of March remaining on their regular season schedule.

Vanderbilt will travel with its freshman quintet of Michelle Peloquin, Tara Kane, Mandy Keily, Kaitlin Reynolds and Karen Grygiel along with senior Jennifer Redmond.

Peloquin leads the team and is second in the NCAA with a 209 average. Kane is next with a 199 average while Keily is at 182, Reynolds 190, Grygiel 188 and Redmond averages 160.

The tournament will be held at the Holiday Bowl Fun Center in Bessemer with five team games beginning Saturday at noon and two more team games and four Baker games Sunday morning starting at 8:45.
