Bowlers earn championship berth

Nov. 5, 2011

ELMWOOD Park, N.J. – Vanderbilt’s bowlers earned a berth in Sunday’s championship Baker bracket despite dropping three of its five team games Saturday.

The Commodores finished second in pin count to host Fairleigh Dickinson and will play the Knights in the first game Sunday morning. The winner gets a bye into the championship while the loser will get the winner of Maryland-Eastern Shore and Sam Houston State, the third and fourth place teams.

Vanderbilt was able to score pin count during the long day but in head-to-head games with top rated teams, the Commodores had a mixture of mistakes and red-hot opposition. Vandy lost close matches to Kutztown and Sam Houston State and saw a relatively tight match with FDU fade away in the tenth frame.

“Way too many mistakes,” summarized Coach John Williamson. “Against Kutztown we had three opens in the first six frames and then ended with three more opens while they bowled much cleaner. Against FDU they closed out the tenth strong and we simply didn’t. We’ll regroup and come back better tomorrow.”
