Bomb Squad hosting golf scramble

Aug. 22, 2008

Former Vanderbilt Basketball Coach C.M. Newton and Commodore stars Barry Booker and Barry Goheen are among the celebrities that will be participating in the “Bomb Squad” Classic Tuesday, September 9, 2008.

The golf scramble will be played at the Vanderbilt Legend’s Club in Franklin as a fundraiser for Roger Rice’s “Look Mom, No Arms!” Outreach Ministry, which will develop a unique, first of its kind community in the United States designed especially for the physically-challenged. Located in Tennessee, this community will consist of a Center for Assistive-Technology and twenty houses. The Outreach Mission: To heighten the ability of the physically-challenged to accomplish their goals in life through the utilization of Assistive-Technology Services.

The Bomb Squad was the nickname of Vanderbilt’s 1988 basketball team, the phrase coined from its prowess at shooting the relatively new 3-point shot. Booker is still among school leaders in 3-point shooting charts while Goheen was famous for buzzer-beating shots.

In addition to Booker and Goheen, other members of that squad along with former Commodores from the Newton era are expected to play.

“This is going to be a lot of fun and we are playing for a very good cause,” Booker says. “We hope to see a lot of area sports fans come up and support this worthy organization.”

To sign-up a foursome or as an individual, either email lmna@charter.net or telephone Roger Rice at 615-525-0470 before Thursday, September 4th. The cost to enter a foursome is only $400 while individuals will play for $125.
