Blakes and Galvan Honored

Vanderbilt's backcourt duo earns a pair of weekly awards from the SEC

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 7-ranked Vanderbilt women’s basketball team collected a pair of weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference on Tuesday, as All-American Mikayla Blakes earned SEC Co-Player of the Week and freshman Aubrey Galvan was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week.

It is the second weekly SEC award for both Blakes and Galvan this season. The duo guided the Commodores to a 2-0 week with wins at Arkansas and over No. 5 LSU at Memorial Gym. The Commodore duo came up in the win over the Tigers, as they scored Vandy’s final 13 points to help the program post its first win over a top-five team since the 2008-09 season.

Blakes earns her second SEC Player of the Week of the season after putting up 33.5 points, 6.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game in a pair of victories. She shared the weekly accolade with Kentucky’s Tonie Morgan. Blakes previously earned the honor on Dec. 2. Overall, it is Blakes’ third career SEC Player of the Week honor, which is second-most in school history. She is also the first Commodore to earn the conference’s top weekly accolade multiple times in a season since Ciaja Harbison won the award twice in 2022-23.

The sophomore put on a show in front of a nationally-televised audience on ESPN, as the Somerset, New Jersey, native scored 32 points and dished out four assists to help the Dores defeat No. 5/5 LSU, 65-61, at Memorial Gym this past Sunday. Blakes took over in the fourth quarter to help Vanderbilt collect the come-from-behind victory over the No. 5-ranked team in the nation. The All-American scored 15 of her game-high 32 points in the game’s last stanza, shooting 55.6 percent in the frame (5-of-9) with a pair of 3-point field goals over the final 10 minutes. The guard registered 10 of Vanderbilt’s final 13 points to close out the game. She also assisted on the go-ahead 3-pointer from freshman Aubrey Galvan with 2:05 remaining gave the Dores a lead they would never relinquish. She opened the week by matching her season high in scoring with 35 points at Arkansas in the 2026 SEC opener. Blakes also equaled her career-best in assists, as she dished out eight assists against the Razorbacks.

Galvan averaged 14.0 points, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals to earn her second SEC Freshman of the Week honor this season. She previously earned the honor on Nov. 25. She shared the weekly accolade with Oklahoma’s Aaliyah Chavez.

The rookie point guard came up big in her first career game against a ranked opponent, as the Deerfield, Illinois, native tallied 14 points and collected three steals in the 65-61 win over No. 5/5 LSU. The freshman hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:05 remaining in the contest to give the Commodores their first win over a top-five team under Ralph. The first-year guard dished out six assists in her SEC debut and added 14 points to help Vanderbilt post an 88-71 win at Arkansas to open conference play. Galvan hit a career-high four 3-pointers against the Razorbacks.

No. 7-ranked Vanderbilt returns to action on Thursday, as the Commodores welcome Missouri to the Music City. Tipoff from Memorial Gymnasium is set for 6:30 p.m. CT, and streams live on SEC Network+.
