Black and Gold Banquet Honors Announced

4/19/2005

Track’s Paige Roberts and baseball’s Antoan Richardson were voted Miss Commodore and Mr. Commodore at the annual Student-Athlete Advisory Board’s Black and Gold Banquet Monday evening.

The Miss and Mr. Commodore awards were newly added this year, driven by the desire of the SAAB to recognize Vanderbilt student-athletes who are excellent in their sport but also popular role models off the field.  Roberts and Richardson were the winners of the student vote.

The “Play of the Year” for both women and men’s sports were also new to the agenda.

Winning the vote for women’s Play of the Year was the tennis teams’ Audra Falk.  The Commodores were tied 3-3 with Baylor in a meet earlier this year in Waco.  Falk had lost the first set to her rated opponent and was trailing 2-5 in what could have been the decisive second set.  However, she rallied to win 7-6 and cruised to a third set victory and team win.

The vote for men’s Play of the Year was relatively easy.  The “Holwerda Heave” as some have come to call the play with .7 of a second left in the National Invitation game against Wichita State was one of the greatest finishes in basketball history.  Jason Holwerda passed the ball full court to an open Corey Smith to allow Vanderbilt to beat Wichita State on national television.

Tennis senior Annie Menees was the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.  Menees has a 3.98 gpa and ranks No. 1 in her Peabody class of 307.  Menees was also presented with the Jim Robbins Award, honoring the 1892 graduate for her all-around academic and athletic excellence.

Cross country’s Tyler Harlan was honored as the Male Scholar Athlete of the year.  Harlan has a 3.92 gpa.

Lacrosse senior Meg Spies was presented with the Community Service Award for her outstanding work on a number of charitable fronts.

One of the most coveted team awards is the Tolbert Cup, which has been presented annually to the varsity team that best combines community service, academic success and athletic achievement.  The winner for 2004-05 was the women’s basketball squad, which combined for over 100 hours of community service, carried a 2.8 grade point and reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.

Soccer’s Brent Richard was named the president of the SAAB for the 2005-06 academic year, succeeding the graduating Robert Dinwiddie.
