Schnielli’s goal came off a free kick from 30-yards out that sailed over VU goalkeeper Jamie Burns to the right upper corner of the net. Following the season opener for both teams, Vanderbilt is now 0-1, while Belmont is 1-0.

Both teams totaled three shots in the first half. Vanderbilt’s best scoring opportunity came at the 22:46 mark when freshman Joe Germanese hit the post. The Commodores outshot Belmont 10-3 in the second half.

“I think we finally got into a flow in the second half,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim McClements said. “We have a lot of new players and we are trying to get used to each other, but we finally got going.”

The Commodores took three shots within two minutes to open the second half, but sophomore Josh Medcalf had a header go wide left and a free kick stopped at the goal by Belmont’s goalie Matt Renfrow. Sophomore Jamie Gilbert also had a long shot go high and left after a Medcalf steal.

“We generated a lot of quality opportunites, we just didn’t find the back of the net,” McClements added. “We just didn’t find a way to win the game.”

Vanderbilt numbered 10 shots in the second half for a total of 13, while Belmont numbered three in the second half for a total of six shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni entered the game at the 70:53 mark to replace Commodore starter Jamie Burns who suffered a hip pointer after colliding with one of his teammates. Burns totaled one save in the contest, while Schoeni did not face a shot on goal.

It is the first Belmont win over Vanderbilt in eight tries.

“This is a rivalry,” McClements added. “Belmont put forth a great effort and I have to compliment them because it was a nice shot that went in. But, we’re disappointed because we definitely had an opportunity to win.”

Germanese, Medcalf and sophomore Justin Moreland each totaled two shots for the Commodores. Bo Konigsmark led Belmont with two shots.

It was a physical contest with 22 fouls called on each team. Four yellow cards were issued, including two on Vanderbilt’s Eric Steen and one on Belmont’s Amr Ali and Eric Pittel.

The Commodores return to action Monday when they host Drury at 3 pm at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
