Vanderbilt sits in fourth after second day of final fall tournament

SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico — A 4-over-par total for Vanderbilt women’s golf in Saturday’s second round has the Commodores in fourth place heading into the final day of the Battle at the Beach.

“I thought we showed a lot of fight today in a round where it just didn’t come as easy for us as it did for the other teams,” said head coach Greg Allen. “We just never really got anything going, and when we did we seemed to make a bogey after a birdie.”

The Dores’ steady scores were not enough to keep pace with the front of the pack as they fell six strokes behind the top three in the team standings after 36 holes with a 572 two-day total.

“But I’m glad we’re getting to go through rounds like this now so we can learn and get better from it,” said Allen. “I’m proud of how we handled today because it very easily could have gone the wrong direction. I’m excited about tomorrow and the opportunity before us.”

Vandy flipped leaders on Saturday as Lynn Lim and Celina Sattelkau, who both finished over par on Friday, carded 1-under-par rounds of 70. Virginie Ding followed with a 72, and Natasha Kiel and Tillie Clagget both notched 76s.

With a 36-hole 141 total, Ding is tied for 11th place, two strokes ahead of Claggett and Lim who are both in a tie for 17th on the individual leaderboard. Sattelkau is also among the top 25 individually with a 145 two-day score.

Host TCU lead the field of 17 teams with a 9-under-par 559 score after the first two days of play, five shots better than LSU and seven in front of Ole Miss. Baylor, sitting three strokes behind the Commodores, rounds out the top five.

Vanderbilt is scheduled to tee off at 7 a.m. CT with LSU, Ole Miss, and TCU on Nos. 1-4 as part of Sunday’s shotgun start for the final round of the tournament. Live scoring for the event can be found HERE.
