Josie Barnes sits in first place after two rounds of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Team Trials, being held this week at The Orleans Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

Barnes, Vanderbilt’s assistant coach, has had consecutive outstanding days to lead a field of 141 professionals and top amateurs, including six others with Vanderbilt connections. The tournament is using an interesting system to determine leaders; competitors get points based upon their finish position for a given day and the points are added together to create the leaderboard.

Barnes finished third on Wednesday’s opening day with scores of 190-221-180-265-226-259 and second Thursday after posting 238-212-255-215-225 and 276. Her cumulative 5 points easily leads the field with three more rounds and a stepladder left this week.

Current Commodores Adel Wahner (41st), Jordan Newham (44th), former `Dore Amanda Fry (60), Kasey Eaton (68), Samantha Gainor (76) and Katie Stark (100) are also competing.

The top four finishers on both the men’s and women’s sides will automatically find a roster spot on Team USA’s 12-person teams.
