NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s basketball head coach Melanie Balcomb announced on Thursday the 2010-11 women’s basketball schedule. The 29-game schedule features 14 teams that reached the 2010 postseason.
Vanderbilt will play 18 games against opponents that reached the postseason, including 11 against teams that played in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
“We believe we have put together another challenging non-conference schedule that will prepare us for the rigors of the Southeastern Conference,” Balcomb said. “Piecing together a schedule that challenges our team and gives our fans an opportunity to watch outstanding competition is important to our program, and I believe we have accomplished this with our schedule.”
Including two exhibition games, Vanderbilt fans will have the opportunity to watch the Commodores in action 17 times at Memorial Gym during the season. Commodore fans will also not have to travel far to watch Vanderbilt at the 2011 SEC Tournament, which returns to Nashville March 3-6 at Bridgestone Arena.
Season tickets start at $35 and are now on sale through the Vanderbilt ticket office. Tickets may be ordered on vucommodores.com at any time. Tickets may also be ordered by phone at 615-322-GOLD (5643) or in person at the McGugin Center from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Vanderbilt full-time employees will be able to order discounted tickets with a valid ID badge and employee ID number.
Vanderbilt has advanced to 11 straight NCAA Tournaments and is one of four teams in the country that has finished the season ranked in the top 25 11 straight years.
Vanderbilt will open its 13-game non-conference schedule on Sunday, Nov. 14 when the Commodores host Howard. Before tipping off the regular season, Vanderbilt will host Delta State (Nov. 4) and Union (Nov. 9) in exhibition games at Memorial Gym.
Following Vanderbilt’s regular season lid-lifter against Howard, the Commodores will host 2010 WNIT-participant Samford on Nov. 18 before making their first road trip of the season on Nov. 21 to Tallahassee, Fla., where the Commodores will face Florida State as part of the Big Six Challenge. The Seminoles advanced to the Elite Eight last year before falling to UCONN.
After their trip to Florida State, the Commodores will return home to host the annual Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament on the last weekend in November. Joining the Commodores for the tournament will be USC, Quinnipiac and 2010 NCAA Tournament participant Princeton.
“We are particularly excited about our annual Thanksgiving Tournament,” Balcomb said. “The tournament continues to get better, and this year’s field is an indication of that.”
The Thanksgiving Tournament will be played on Friday (Nov. 26) and Sunday (Nov. 28), and will be sandwiched around Vanderbilt’s final regular season football game that Saturday (Nov. 27) against Wake Forest.
The next week, the Commodores hit the road for back-to-back road games at Bowling Green (Dec. 1) and at Denver (Dec. 5). The game at Denver will be a homecoming for Vanderbilt senior forward Hannah Tuomi, a Thornton, Colo., native.
Vanderbilt will play in its second regular season tournament Dec. 29 and 30 when the Commodores travel to Blacksburg, Va., to play in the Hilton Garden Classic. Vanderbilt will play Delaware on Dec. 29 and either Virginia Tech or Alcorn State on Dec. 30.
The 2011 SEC schedule includes 16 games for the second straight year. The Commodores will play home-and-home series with Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Tennessee — all of which advanced to postseason play a year ago.
The Commodores will open SEC play on Jan. 2 with a trip to Ole Miss. Vanderbilt will then host Mississippi State (Jan. 6) and Auburn (Jan. 9) before hitting the road for games at Alabama (Jan. 13). Vanderbilt’s SEC schedule is highlighted by a national television appearance on ESPN when the Commodores travel to Tennessee on Jan. 15.
Vanderbilt closes its regular season by playing two of its final three games at home, beginning with Kentucky on Feb. 20. Senior day festivities will take place on Feb. 24 when the Commodores host Florida. Vanderbilt concludes its regular season Feb. 27 at South Carolina.
As aforementioned, the 2011 SEC Tournament returns to Nashville March 3-6. Nashville last hosted the tournament in 2008.
The 2011 Final Four will be played April 3-5 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Game times are subject to change once the league and its television partners announce the season’s entire television schedule.
