The Vanderbilt freshman from Loves Park, IL, enjoys the beauty of art and architecture. While in Las Vegas competing at the Brunswick Tournament this past January Kaitlin Reynolds found a little time to enjoy the architect of Caesar’s Palace, the Venetian and Bellagio.

“We didn’t really have a lot of time but to bowl.” Reynolds said. The team did manage to find the M n M factory on the strip and watch the choreographed water feature Fountains of Bellagio.

Free time for student athletes is a misnomer. Classes, practice, studying and travel comprise the majority of daily routines. Once in awhile Reynolds finds the opportunity to draw and paint.

“I love to paint.” Reynolds said, “I don’t get a lot of options.

A watercolor of lilies in dark blues and purples adorns her campus room. Her inspiration came from a photograph even though lilies aren’t typically in that hue. Reynolds room is accented with her pencil drawings and photography.

Despite her passion for art, Reynolds is pursuing an English degree. “I choose English; it allows me a lot of different options. Art is limited and hard to make a good career.”

Reynolds is interested in a variety of subject matter and overwhelmed to narrow herself into a slot for the rest of her life. “I don’t know really, I’ve thought of a lot of different things, going to graduate school to be a professor or finding a publishing company.”

I’m very independent and I don’t mind spending time by myself.”

From sixth grade until her sophomore year in high school Reynolds played the French horn. She was a member of the marching band for two years before concentrating on her game. “I gave up in it to take harder classes in school and focus on bowling,” she commented.

During Reynolds’s senior year in high school her parents wore matching bowling shirts to her games. The bright orange shirts read Katie’s Mom and Katie’s Dad. For a shy girl it was a bit embarrassing. Reynolds admitted, “I’m a quiet person.”

This year Reynolds purchased her parents matching Vanderbilt sweater vests to subdue them. Jim and Char attended the Music City Classic tournament were their daughter broke the school record with a 299 game. “They were really proud of me. It was my highest game ever,” she said.

Reynolds admits her favorite singer, movie, actor is constantly fluctuating. Depending on the day and her mood she’ll pick different answers. She laughed and referred to her favorites listed under the Commodores bowling roster. “London, England is my favorite vacation spot but I haven’t been here.”

“I’m not a regular person who has a lot of favorites. I never put the same answers in a questionnaire,” Reynolds giggled.

The Illinois native is decisive on her baseball team and never changes her answer.

“The White Sox they won the World Series,” she proudly stated. Although her hometown friends are Cub fans she has always been a diehard White Sox fan. Each summer her family would attend White Sox games.

Reynolds will make her second appearance in two years in Texas where she’ll compete in a championship tournament. In 2004 she competed at the Junior Gold Bowling championship in Dallas. Next week she’ll join Commodore teammates to vie for the NCAA Bowling Championship in Houston (April 13-15.)
