Freshman Alison Armstrong carded an even-par 72 to lead the Commodores after the first round of the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the UNC Finley Course in Chapel Hill, N.C., a score which puts Armstrong in a tie for 17th individually. As a team, Vanderbilt is in a tie for 10th with a team score of 296.
Armstrong, playing in her fourth collegiate tournament, carded a team-high four birdies in her round Friday, with those coming on number two, five, six, and 17. Other counters for the Commodores in the first round include fellow freshman Abbey Carlson, who carded a two-over par, 74, sophomore Courtney Zeng, who shot a three-over, 75, and junior Alexandra Farnsworth, who fired a four-over par, 76.
“I was really proud of the effort today and thought from tee to green we were decent,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Unfortunately, we had as many three putts as we did birdies. We got in some really good work on the practice green after the round so hopefully we got that cleaned up for tomorrow. From an individual standpoint, it was really nice to see our freshmen play well.”
The Commodores are tied with Michigan for 10th in the team standings, and trail first-round leader Wake Forest by 14 shots. The Demon Deacons hold a one-shot lead over Ohio State. Individually, Wake Forest’s Jennifer Kupcho has the lead after firing a five-under par, 67, on Friday.
The second 18 holes of the 54-hole event will be played on Saturday in Chapel Hill.
