BLACKSBURG, Va. – What was already a memorable year for former Commodore Chantelle Anderson got even better on Monday when she was officially announced as an assistant coach on Dennis Wolff’s women’s basketball staff at Virginia Tech.
“I’m really thankful for the opportunity to coach at Virginia Tech and am excited to begin the process of turning around this program,” Anderson said. “I also look forward to the chance of working with the student-athletes at Virginia Tech and helping their development on and off the court.”
Vanderbilt’s all-time leading scorer, Anderson (2000-03) became the fourth player in school history and second women’s basketball player to have her jersey retired during a ceremony on Feb. 13. She began her coaching career as an assistant coach at Palm Beach Atlantic just last year and is humbled to be receiving an opportunity to coach in the ACC so early into her coaching career.
“There was a time I didn’t think I would even get into coaching, but God takes you down paths you don’t expect,” Anderson said. “I am excited to meet this challenge with the same vigor and enthusiasm that I have met every other challenge in my life with and prove that I am deserving of this opportunity.”
Anderson was officially hired at Virginia Tech last Monday and has hit the ground running immediately since arriving in Blacksburg, Va., on Wednesday night. After passing her recruiting test, she was on the road recruiting Thursday and was just returning back to campus on Monday after spending the weekend recruiting at a Tournament.
Anderson was a part of Vanderbilt’s inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2008 and was a three-time All-American selection by the Associated Press and a two-time Kodak All-American.
“After meeting Chantelle, I became totally convinced that all of her varied experiences and talent more than made up for her limited coaching background,” said Wolff. “Her enthusiasm and personality will enable her to connect immediately with our players and prospects.”
Following her Vanderbilt career, Anderson was the No. 2 player selected in the 2003 WNBA Draft and played in the WNBA through 2009.
Hired with Anderson was assistant coach Billi Godsey who was previously at UMBC.
