Amira Joseph named SEC Freshman of the Week

Sept. 20, 2011

Nashville, Tenn. –

The SEC named Vanderbilt’s Amira Joseph as their Freshman of the Week after her performance at the Commodore Classic this past weekend. Joseph finished first for the Commodores and seventh overall in the meet, which saw 24 school and 194 competitors in the 5K event.

“I think it was a much better race for Amira after her first race two weeks earlier,” said head coach Steve Keith. “It’s nice to drop down into the low 18s on our course, which is a very challenging course. She has opened up more opportunities for herself with this performance as we’re going to bring her to Minnesota this coming weekend.”

Joseph clocked in with a time of 18:17.50 to illustrate the strength of the young team and the depth of the “b” squad, stepping up to the challenge of the freshmen carrying the event. She goes with the rest of the top runners to the Roy Griak Invitational this weekend.
