The second day of the PING/ASU Invitational is in the books, and the Commodores are in a tie for 14th place at the ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Vanderbilt has a team total of 594 (295-299, +26), and junior Anna Leigh Keith, playing as an individual, leads all Commodores golfers (tied for 43rd).
Marina Alex, who fired a 78 on Friday, rebounded to post VU’s best round of the day with an even-par 71. Other scores for the Commodores on Saturday included Irina Gabasa’s 75, Kendall Martindale’s 76, Stratton’s 77, and Rene Sobolewski’s 78. Keith, who is playing as an individual, carded a two-over par 73.
“We have had too many big numbers this weekend, and it’s hurt us,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Tomorrow’s weather is going to be very windy, and if we play smart and hit better shots, I believe we can make up some ground because everyone will be posting big numbers.
“We’ll be fine tomorrow. We had some good practice after the round today, and we’ll be ready to finish strong on Sunday.”
Number-one ranked UCLA leads the tournament with a three-under par, 565 (284-281), nine strokes better than Texas and Texas A&M, who are both tied for second. The Bruins’ Tiffany Lua leads all individuals with a five-under par 137 (68-69).
The final round concludes Sunday from Tempe, Ariz.
