Vanderbilt sophomore Marina Alex fired a five-under par, 66, to lead the Commodores after the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif. Alex is in a tie for second in the individual standings, while Vanderbilt is in ninth place in the team standings with a six-over par, 290.
Alex, who is tied with Caroline Hedwell of Oklahoma State for second place, is one stroke back of Texas’ Madison Pressel, who leads the tournament with a six-under par, 65. The sophomore from Wayne, N.J., posted an eagle, six birdies, and two bogeys in route to her first-round 66 on Friday.
Vanderbilt counted Alex’s 66, a 73 from senior Brooke Goodwin (T-34), a 75 from freshman Lauren Stratton, and one of the 76’s posted by junior Megan Grehan and freshman Anna Leigh Keith for their team total of 290 on the day. The Commodores trail first place Arizona State, who shot an 11-under par, 273, by 17 strokes heading into the second round on Saturday.
The 15 teams will tee off on the par-71, 6,156-yard Stanford Golf Course on Saturday morning for the tournament’s second round.
