Alex in 4th after 2nd round of U.S. Women's Open

July 10, 2015

Former Vanderbilt star Marina Alex carded a second-round 71 on Friday at the U.S. Women’s Open and is in fourth place heading into the the third round at the Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club.  Alex trails leader Amy Yang by four shots and Stacy Lewis and Shiho Oyama, who are in a tie for second, by one stroke.

Alex posted two birdies, a bogey, and a double-bogey in her round on Friday for her 71.  The Wayne, N.J., native entered the day in a tie for the lead after firing a four-under, 66, on Thursday.

“I made a lot of good pars and had a slight hiccup on 13, but I knew there were a couple of holes coming in where I could make birdie, and on 14 and 16, I did and was able to take advantage of that,” said Alex.  “I was also able to make a good par on 18 after hitting into the bunker.  I managed to hold it together through nine holes and that really calmed me down.  I was able to minimize the damage on the front making a birdie and eight pars.  On 13 I just hit a bad drive, but I knew I could get some strokes back after that, and I was able to do that.”

Alex will play with Oyama and will tee off at 12:54 CT Saturday.  Coverage begins on Fox at 1:30 CT.
