Alex and Grehan on All-SEC 2nd team

April 29, 2011

Vanderbilt women’s golfers Marina Alex and Megan Grehan were named to the All-SEC second team on Friday in an announcement made by the SEC.

Alex, the 2010 SEC Championship medalist and SEC Player of the Year, led the Vanderbilt team in 2010-11 with a 73.8 stroke average and had three top 20 finishes, two top tens, and one top five this season. Her best finish of the season came in the team’s opener at the NCAA Fall Preview in College Station, Texas, when she finished second out of 93 golfers with an eight-under par, 208 (67-71-70). She has also posted the team’s two lowest rounds of the season – a 66 in the first round of the Pac-10/SEC Challenge, and 67 at the Fall Preview in the first round.

Grehan, the lone senior on this year’s squad, has played in every tournament of her four-year career and is second on the team in stroke average at 74.1 in 2010-11. She has one top 10 finish and four top 20’s so far this year, and had her best finish of the season at the Bryan National Collegiate, where she ended the tournament in a tie for seventh out of 90 golfers with an eight-over par, 224 (72-76-76). Grehan posted her low round of the season in the third round of the Tar Heel Invitational (68) and led the team in scoring in three tournaments this season – Mason Rudolph Championship, Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, and the Bryan National Collegiate.

Alex, Grehan, and her teammates will begin play in the NCAA East Regional beginning next Thursday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
