4×800 Relay Team Barely Miss School Record 1/15/2006
Lexington, Ky. – A foursome of Commodore middle distance runners narrowly missed the team school record in the 4×800-meter relay this weekend at the Kentucky Invitational. The 4×800 relay squad of senior Caitlin Shannon, senior Alisa Cotter, junior Ashleigh Wetzel and senior Latisha Bryant finished fourth overall with a 9:19.19 performance, the second fastest ever by a Commodore foursome at the distance. The existing record of 9:15.56 was established two years ago. Freshman long jumper Lauryn Smith and junior distance runner Amy Huss turned in two of the team’s top individual performances in the Commodores’ first meet of the year. Three top veterans on the team — junior hurdler Amanda Mullins-Hall, senior distance runner Erika Schneble and senior multi-event athlete Garnetta Holloway — did not compete. Smith produced the sixth best long jump ever by a Commodore indoors with a 18′.25″ effort. Later this season, the talented freshman appears to have an excellent chance to become just the third Vanderbilt long jumper to break the 19-foot barrier. Huss, coming off the best cross country season of her Commodore career, easily eclipsed a personal best in the 3,000 meters, becoming the team’s 10th fastest ever at the distance with a 10:06.67 clocking. Results from additional Commodore participants follows: High Jump — Anjarae Washington, sophomore, 5’2.25″ Mile — Wetzel, 5:08.47; Cotter, 5:12.55; Shannon, 5:14.42; Brittany Sizer, junior, 5:18.74; Carmen Mims, freshman, 5:19.15 Long Jump – Sydney Faulkner, sophomore, 16’5″ 400 Meters — Lauren Fortson, sophomore, 59.76 800 Meters — Brittney Duffy-Alberto, freshman, 2:28.53; Anna Morgan, senior, 2:29.28; Stephanie Douglas, junior, 2:30.01; Kellianne Kleeman, freshman, 2:30.37 3,000 Meters — Julie Eckerly, sophomore, 10:26.77; Shannon Capps, junior, 10:39.46; Valerie Kazmer, sophomore, 10:39.74; Debbie Huss, junior, 10:43.45; Whitney Thurman, senior, 10:45.51
