The Commodores shot a second-round 289 on Friday in the West Regional, and is one stroke behind Purdue on the team leader board after the second day of play. Vanderbilt has a team total of 578 (289-289) heading into the final round on Saturday at the Stanford University Golf Course.
Sophomore Kendall Martindale leads all Vanderbilt players with a two-round total of 142 (71-71) after an even-par, 71, on Friday. Martindale is in a tie for sixth on the individual leader board. Fellow sophomore Irina Gabasa is tied for 12th and has a two-round score of 144 (71-73), and freshman Jenny Hahn and senior Lauren Stratton capped off the Commodores’ counting scores with Hahn posting a one-over par, 72, and Stratton her second consecutive two-over par, 73, on Friday. Hahn and Stratton each have a total of 146 and are in a tie for 24th. Junior Rene Sobolewski is in the clubhouse at 155 (77-78) and is in a tie for 77th.
“I’m really proud of the way we played our last nine holes,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “They battled all day and showed some poise, especially after a few had a shaky start. We’re excited about the opportunity before us tomorrow.”
The Boilermakers fired a two-over par, 286, team score to move into the second-round lead. Southern Cal, the number-one seed, is one stroke behind the Commodores in third place.
Annie Park of USC continues to hold the individual lead with a score of 138 (67-71), one stroke better than Cassy Isagawa of Oregon.
The top eight teams at the West Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships May 21-24 at the UGA Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The top two individuals not associated with the eight teams from each region will advance as individuals to the NCAA Championships.
