2005 Commodore Season Preview 9/6/2005 Good news for the Commodores is that their top five scorers all return for the 2005 season, led by all-MVC selection John Krause and MVC Freshman of the Year Joe Germanese. Last season, the Commodores more than doubled their offensive output from the previous season scoring 94 points compared to 42 points in 2003. The Commodores tripled their 2003 assists total with 32 after totaling 10 in 2003. Krause scored 27 points (12 goals, 3 assists), including four game-winners that vaulted him in seventh place in the VU record book for points in a season. Germanese scored 16 points (5 goals, 6 assists) with two game winners, followed by Josh Medcalf with 11 points (3 goals, 5 assists). Junior co-captain Jamie Gilbert played in all 18 games with eight points (2 goals, 3 assists) with Patrick Ryan leading the team with seven assists. Ryan’s seven assists moved him into a tie for 8th place on the VU Season Assists Leader List. The Commodores return 19 letterwinners, including nine starters. Joining them will be nine newcomers who VU Head Coach Tim McClement’s regards as “the strongest recruiting class to date”. McClements also said, “The mix of experience and talented young players should make for an exciting season.” Senior Kenny Schoeni returns to goal after playing in 17 games last season with a 2.00 goal average. He recorded two shutouts and numbered 72 saves. Senior co-captain Brent Richard, who has played in every game in the last two seasons, returns to help anchor the midfield. Senior Ryan Paugh also returns after missing the entire 2004 season after undergoing knee surgery. With the right mix, the Commodores should be a well-balanced team with a great deal of depth, which is imperative for competing in the competitive Missouri Valley Conference. |
