Scouting The Commodores
The No. 13/17 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team will look to improve to 3-0 when it takes on UAB Thursday night at Memorial Gym. Through two games, junior guard Jasmine Lister leads Vanderbilt in scoring at 16.5 points per game, followed closely by senior forward Tiffany Clarke at 16.0 points per contest and junior guard Christina Foggie at 15.5 points per outing. Lister is also averaging an SEC-best 7.5 assists per game, while Clarke is posting a team high 7.5 rebounds per game. Elan Brown (7.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals) and Kady Schrann have joined the trio in the starting lineup. Other Commodore players to watch include Kendall Shaw (5.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks) and Heather Bowe (4.0 points, 2.0 rebounds).
Scouting The Blazers
UAB enters under ninth-year head coach Audra Smith at 2-0 on the season. The Blazers scored a 72-54 win over Austin Peay in the opener and followed that win up with a victory at Alabama A&M, 72-53. Amber Jones has led UAB in scoring, averaging 17.5 points per game. Karisma Chapman is close behind at 16.0 points per outing, while also adding a team best 5.5 rebounds per game. It marks the first time UAB is 2-0 since 1996. They will be attempting to defeat an SEC squad for the first time since a win over Alabama in 2005.
The Series – Vanderbilt vs. UAB
This will be the fifth meeting between UAB and Vanderbilt, with the Commodores having won all four previous meetings. The teams played in 1985 and 1986 in Birmingham and Nashville, respectively. They met again in a home-and-home series in 2006 and 2007, with the `07 meeting a 92-51 Vanderbilt win at Memorial Gym. Merideth Marsh and Liz Sherwood led the Commodores with 13 points each in the game.
On Deck – Dayton
Vanderbilt will play its first road game outside Music City on Sunday, November 18 when it travels to Dayton to take on the Flyers. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. CT.
