NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 12th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s basketball team had little trouble advancing to the championship of its Holiday Classic, defeating neighboring Lipscomb, 109-40, Wednesday at Memorial Gymnasium.
Vanderbilt’s win set up a championship matchup with Indiana State — 79-68 winners over Longwood earlier in the day. Longwood and Lipscomb will begin Thursday’s action at 1 p.m. CT, with Vanderbilt and Indiana State to follow 30 minutes after the consolation game concludes (approximately 3:15 p.m.).
The Commodore win was the third-largest margin of victory in Vanderbilt history and the most points scored by the Commodores (10-1) since they put up 116 against Hampton in 1998.
All 12 players on Vanderbilt’s roster scored at least five points in the game, with only four players reaching double-figures — led by freshman Amber Norton’s game-high 14 points.
Norton was one of four true freshmen to register career highs — with Jessica Mooney (12 points on 6-of-6 shooting), Ashlee Bridge (9) and Merideth Marsh (9) also putting up personal bests.
Sophomore Jennifer Risper scored a career-high 11, and senior Carla Thomas added 10. Lipscomb (3-10) was led by nine points from Catie Woods.
The Commodores scored 41 points off of 29 Lipscomb turnovers. All 12 of Mooney’s points came in transition, as she led VU with six steals.
Vanderbilt connected on 25-of-31 shots from the field in the second half (80.6%) to expand a 33-point halftime lead.
