North Brunswick, NJ—Vanderbilt scored a quality win in Sunday’s opening Baker game but came up short in two subsequent games and finished fourth in the 26-team New Jersey Jamboree.
The Commodore’s Robyn Renslow made the all-tournament team based upon her third place finish in the 11 prior team games.
In the opening game, the Commodores bounced back from a 0-2 deficit to win four straight games from ninth-ranked Stephen F. Austin. Vandy used a lineup of Tori Ferris, Amanda Fry, Natalie Goodman and Nicole Mosesso in the third spot, Giselle Poss and Renslow.
The turning point in this win, VU’s 10th of the three day event, appeared to be when Ferris and Fry struck multiple times to ignite the Black and Gold’s offense. With several `four-baggers’ on the books, SFA – who was second two weeks ago at Tulane – was unable to keep pace and Vanderbilt was able to substitute Olivia Wirtz and Katie Stark at times.
Advancing to the semi-final round, Vanderbilt played third-ranked Sam Houston State. After jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead, the Commodores were not able maintain their pace while the consistent Bearkats methodically pulled away using scores of 246-222-178 and 244.
In the consolation game, it was Vanderbilt and No. 2 rated Arkansas State, who had pushed up from its fifth place qualifying finish by virtue of two wins. At this point, Vanderbilt’s lineup was Ferris, Rebeca Reguero, Mosesso, Poss and Renslow and they were able to forge a 3-1 lead.
However, from that point the `Dores were unable to maintain the consistency that ASU showed. Untimely splits that resulted in open frames opened the door for the Red Wolves, who ended up sweeping the final three games to win 4-3.
Host Fairleigh Dickinson won the tournament,beating Sam Houston in the final.
Vanderbilt’s next action is Nov. 7-9 at the Crusader Invitational in Indiana.
