• California is 2-2 to start the season after suffering back-to-back losses to Wright Start (3-2) and top-ranked Nebraska (3-0)
• Cal has made 18 NCAA tournament appearances in the program’s history with the last coming in 2013
• It is Jen Malcom’s second season as head coach of the Golden Bears
• In Malcom’s inaugural season, Cal recorded its most conference wins since 2019, finishing 7-13 in ACC matches and 15-17 overall
• The Golden Bears opened their season with wins over San Diego State (3-1) and San Francisco (3-0) to win the California Tournament
• Libero Sophia Johnson was named the tournament MVP for holding opponents to a combined .094 hitting percentage
• Setter Natalie Lau earned all-tournament honors after reaching her 1,000th career assist

SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS
• UC Santa Barbara (3-2) is coming off a 3-1 win over RV San Diego at the Trojan Invitational
• At the same event, the Gauchos took top 25 opponents Southern California (22) and Creighton (13) to five sets but ultimately dropped both contests
• In 2023, Matt Jones was elevated from associate head coach to head coach and led the Gauchos to a Big West regular season title in his inaugural season
• Jones first came to Santa Barbara in 2017 as an assistant coach and was promoted to associate head coach in 2021
• Eva Travis earned an all-tournament team nod after totaling 53 kills across the three matches and averaging 3.79 kills per set
• Santa Barbara was picked fourth in the Big West preseason poll, and 2024 Big West Freshman of the Year Travis was picked preseason all-conference

TIES TO THE GAUCHOS
• Jones and Vanderbilt’s offensive coordinator Lauren Plum and freshman Ariel Chime have either coached or played for the COAST Volleyball Club in San Diego
• Setter Michelle Zhao spent the 2023 spring semester at Loyola Marymount and would have overlapped with Vanderbilt’s Moore and Isabella Bareford

MORE OF MOORE AND BAREFORD
• Moore and Bareford transferred to Vanderbilt from Loyola Marymount where both earned All-West Coast Conference honors during multiple seasons
• So far this season, Moore has tallied 45 kills on 100 sets from Bareford for a .45 kill percentage
• Vs. Kansas, Moore registered a career-high 17 kills with 15 of those coming off 25 sets from Bareford for a .44 kill percentage
• In 2023, Moore led the NCAA in hitting percentage at .454

LEADING THE ATTACK
• Chaney has led Vanderbilt in kills for four straight matches and has posted two 20-point appearances
• The junior set season-highs in kills (21), kill percentage (.600), hitting percentage (.400), points (26) and aces (4) at Lipscomb
• Chaney is the top-ranked player in the SEC for individual points with 26 scored at Lipscomb
• Her 21 kills vs. the Bisons are the third-highest number of kills by an SEC player this season
• Chaney ranks 10th in the SEC in points, averaging 4.55 points per set and is tied for 10th in the league with an average of .50 service aces per set

DORES ON DEFENSE
• Vanderbilt ranks in the top half of the SEC in kills (11.40 – 8th) and digs (11.40 – 7th) allowed per set
• Hailee Mack posted a season-best 28 digs in her collegiate debut vs. Kansas, the most digs by an SEC player this season
• The sophomore has recorded 10-plus digs in every match this season
• Mack ranks eighth in the conference in digs per set at 4.20

ISA IN CONTROL
• Bareford has registered 40-plus assists in two matches this season, posting 46 vs. Kansas and 41 at Lipscomb
• At Lipscomb, Vandy killed 54 percent of balls Bareford set and hit .461
