Vanderbilt was a founding member of the SEC in 1933.
Built in 1922, FirstBank Stadium (then Dudley Field) was the first football stadium built in the South.
Vanderbilt’s Perry Wallace was the first Black basketball player in SEC history. Perry Wallace Way extends through the Vanderbilt campus from West End Ave. to Blakemore Ave.
Vanderbilt athletic teams have won five national championships.
The most influential sportswriter in history, Grantland Rice, played baseball while attending Vanderbilt. Rice coined the phrase, “It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game.”
Vanderbilt’s teams are called the Commodores in honor of the university’s namesake, Cornelius Vanderbilt, who was nicknamed “The Commodore.”
Vanderbilt athletic director Candice Lee is the first woman to lead an SEC Athletic Department.
Vanderbilt’s men’s and women’s basketball teams play at Memorial Gymnasium, which opened in 1952 to honor Vanderbilt students killed in World War II.
