NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite holding an 11-6 advantage in shots taken, the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team dropped its 2012 home opener to visiting Gonzaga, 1-0, on Sunday after at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
Only four of Vanderbilt’s 11 shots were on frame, and GU goalkeeper Susan Brown saved all four. The Bulldogs put two of their six shots on goal. Gonzaga’s breakthrough came in the 27th minute.
Vanderbilt took a foul to stop a Gonzaga move at about 28 yards from goal. Bulldog Tori Lee stepped up to take the free kick, but instead of serving the ball into the box she played short and to the right. Kasey Robusky took one touch before striking a shot that deflected off a Commodore defender and headed toward the left, upper 90 of Alexa Levick’s goal. Levick dove to her right and got a piece of the shot, but could not stop it from crossing the line.
Freshman Jamie Kator notched two shots on goal and had one of the game’s best chances. In the 35th minute, she got to a loose ball just inside the left side of the 18-yard box and struck a shot bound for the side netting inside the far post. Brown dove to her left and tipped the ball wide to rob Kator of her first collegiate goal.
Vanderbilt’s fifth game of the season was the squad’s first at home. The Commodores remain at home this week to play host to Memphis on Thursday, Sept. 6.
