ATHENS, Ga. – The Vanderbilt swimming team left it all in the pool at day two of the SEC Championships.
Kicking the day off with the 500-yard freestyle, five Commodores competed in the race with Lara Hernandez-Tome leading the Dores. She touched the wall in just under five minutes (4:59.82).
Krislyn Porter earned her personal-best 5:05.71, crushing her previous record of 5:08.43. Porter was followed by junior Namilla Sanchez who earned her season-best time 5:07.32.
Heading into the 200-yard individual medley, Lindsey Gordon raked in another personal-best time for the Commodores (2:06.96), breaking her previous record of 2:07.13.
Sophomore Brooke Ellis led the Dores in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:06.07 and marking her season-best time. Hannah Hunt (2:06.57) and Eun Sol Chon (2:09.52) both notched season bests.
Diving into the pool for the Commodores’ last race of the prelims, freshman Tonner DeBeer swam a 23.19 in the 50-yard freestyle to set a Vanderbilt freshman record. DeBeer beat senior Johanna Goldblatt’s previous record of 23.47.
“I’m thrilled to break the freshman record,” said DeBeer. “However, it was very bittersweet since it was Johanna’s record. I’m very happy that I got to swim with her as she competed in her last 50 free as a Commodore on the relay tonight. She said that she was passing the sprint legacy on to me and that was a great way to begin the meet.”
Goldblatt also competed in the 50 free, breaking her season record with a 23.57.
Following in her sister’s footsteps, sophomore Rachel Goldblatt raced her personal-best time in the 50 free (24.50).
Closing out day two of the SEC Championships, the Commodores took the pool to compete in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Goldblatt, DeBeer, Abby Burke and Paige Hamilton represented Vanderbilt in the relay. They finished with a season-best 1:32.63, beating their previous time of 1:33.53.
The Commodores will take to the pool Thursday to compete in the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle.|
