Women’s Soccer Opens SEC Tournament Against Georgia

11/2/2005

Orange Beach, Ala. – The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team is set to face Georgia in the first round of the Southeastern Conference tournament Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. CT.

The fourth-seeded Commodores (15-3-1) are looking to avenge a loss to the fifth-seeded Bulldogs (12-5-2) earlier this year.

Vanderbilt is 11-8-1 all-time in the tourney, with championships in 1993 and 1994. Last year’s squad went 1-1 in the tournament with a win over Mississippi State in the first round, before getting edged by Tennessee, 1-0, in the semifinals.

Thursday’s meeting against Georgia will be only the second time the teams have met in the postseason. The Bulldogs came away with a 2-1 win in the semifinals in 2000. Overall, Vanderbilt leads the all-time series 7-5.

The winner of tomorrow night’s match will take on the winner of the Tennessee (No. 1 seed)- LSU (No. 8 seed) contest on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
