Women’s soccer looks ahead to Kentucky

10/28/2004

The women’s soccer team is traveling to Lexington, Kentucky to compete in their last SEC regular season game against Kentucky. Game is set for Friday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m.

The Commodores have already earned their spot in the SEC tournament but still look to improve on their 4-2-4 record in SEC play. Vanderbilt is led by junior Meghan Habig who comes into this game leading the SEC in goals scored and goals per game in SEC contests. Also leading the way is Lea Lafield who is on top of the season records in the SEC for assists and assists per game. Goalkeeper Tyler Griffin has shown excellent effort as well with league leading saves and save percentage.

“This is a very big game for us as a team,” said Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill. “Year in and year out, Kentucky has given us a very tough game.  As a matter of fact, the last four years have been a 1 goal game. Kentucky will be playing with a lot of emotion.  They are fighting to keep their spot at the SEC tournament in Auburn next week.”

Kentucky is currently 3-6-1 in the SEC and 6-10-1 overall. Kentucky needs a win to clinch the eighth seed in the SEC tournament. They have lost four consecutive matches coming into this game. The game will be played in honor of Kentucky’s four seniors: Erin Witchey, Jessica Laswell, Alli Haeussler and Danielle Siupski. Kentucky’s points and assists leader Elisabeth Jones hopes to continue her success in the game against the Dores.

The Commodores have played in SEC leading six overtime games this season. “As a team, we must do a better job of playing for an entire game,” said Hill. “Our last game against Ole Miss was filled with 10 minutes sparks of quality soccer and energy.  If we are going to continue to strive for a SEC Championship and potential NCAA bid, we must manage our emotions and focus on winning games.  And winning takes a total team effort for 90 plus minutes.”
