Williams scores 16th as `Dores fall to #13 SC

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Cheyna Williams scored her 16th goal of the year, but it wasn’t enough as the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team fell to No. 13 South Carolina, 4-1, Friday night at Stone Stadium. The Commodores fall to 4-10-3 on the season and 1-7-1 in SEC play.

With her goal in the 60th minute, Williams moved into a tie for second place on the single season goal record with Laura Koerner. Koerner scored 16 twice in her career with the Commodores, in both 1996 and 1997.

The 13th-ranked Gamecocks came out of the gate firing. South Carolina got on the board early converting on a corner kick just a minute and half into the game. The Gamecocks would continue to roll, scoring twice more in just the first 15 minutes of the game.

The Vanderbilt defense would settle in, holding South Carolina to just one goal in the next 75 minutes of play, but the damage was done.

Williams got the Commodores on the board in the 60th minute when she dribbled down the left side of the field and fired a shot up and over the SC goalkeeper.

That was about all the `Dores could muster up offensively against the stout South Carolina defense. Vanderbilt took just five shots in the game, with Williams’ goal being the lone one to make it on the net.

Vanderbilt will look to get back to their winning ways, Sunday, when they head to Auburn to face the Tigers who are coming off their first conference win of the season over Arkansas. The match is set to start at 2 p.m. from the Auburn Soccer Complex. Live stats from Sunday’s contest can be found by going to VUCommodores.com, or by clicking .
