Williams on All-South Region team

Dec. 4, 2012

Cheyna Williams has been named to the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s All-South Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

A freshman forward, Williams led the Commodore soccer team this season with 18 points on six goals and six assists.

Williams“This a great award for Cheyna, especially considering that she missed most of our last six games with an injury and those coaches did not actually see her play or get a chance to vote for her,” Head Coach Derek Greene said. “It truly shows the difference she made for us on the attack and the impact she made on other coaches while she was healthy.”

Williams made an immediate impact for the Commodores during her first season in Nashville. The Hampton, Ga., native started the first 15 games of the year for Coach Greene’s Vanderbilt squad before missing time at the end of the season. She accounted for seven points in Southeastern Conference play including a pair of goals in VU’s 3-2 win over Arkansas. She was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in October.

“Cheyna is very talented going to goal. I know she is really looking forward to being at full strength next year and being a big part of helping move our program forward. We are really happy that Cheyna received this recognition.”

Vanderbilt’s last honoree on the NSCAA All-South team came in 2010, when Molly Kinsella was so lauded following her senior campaign.
