VU Soccer Falls To Kentucky, 1-0

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Junior Meghan Jones goal in the 77th minute propelled Kentucky to a 1-0 win over Vanderbilt in women’s soccer action Friday night at the UK Soccer Complex.

The Commodores wrapped up their regular season slate at 10-4-5 overall and 6-3-2 in SEC play. The Wildcats improved to 10-6-3 on the year and 5-3-2 in league action.

Jones’ goal came at the 76:10 mark when she shot from the left side just outside the 18-yard box over the head of goalkeeper Tyler Griffin. It was the first goal of the year for Jones.

The contest was evenly played through wet field conditions with the Wildcats holding an 11-10 shot advantage. UK keeper Anne Ogundele made six saves, while VU’s Griffin made five.

Lea Lafield led the Commodores with four shots, while Jones led the Wildcats with four as well.

Vanderbilt has clinched its fourth straight SEC Tournament berth and 13th appearance overall. The team will depart for Orange Beach, Ala. Tuesday morning.

Both Vanderbilt and Kentucky will find out their seeding and opponents after Sunday’s Kentucky/Arkansas game in Fayetteville. The contest is a makeup of a previously scheduled game that was postponed due to weather. If Kentucky wins, there would be a three way tie for second place in the SEC (Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt). UK would be the No. 2 seed due to head to head wins over both the Lady Vols and the Commodores. UT would be the No. 3 seed due to its win over VU in the regular season and the Commodores would be the No. 4 seed. If Kentucky falls to Arkansas, UT would be No. 2 and Vanderbilt would be the No. 3 seed.
