NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team came out on the wrong side of a tight game Sunday, falling 1-0 to Tennessee at the VU Soccer Complex when the Lady Vols scored in the 84th minute.
Vanderbilt came out quick and controlled the opening minutes of the game, but were unable to capitalize on a number of dangerous chances. The first half stats evened out over the course of 45 minutes, with both teams taking five shots and each goalkeeper making two saves.
The pace of play escalated in the second half, with the teams combining for 19 shots over the final 45 minutes. Tennessee took seven corner kicks in the period, but the Commodores were able to avoid giving up a set-piece goal.
UT’s breakthrough came at the 83:45 mark when defender Tori Bailey dribbled from about 40 yards out to the edge of the penalty box and looped a left-footed shot into the upper 90 past VU freshman goalkeeper Brittanie Barbero.
Making only her third career start, Barbero made seven saves for the Commodores. UT’s Julie Eckel also had seven saves on the day.
On a short week Vanderbilt will travel to Oxford, Miss., this week to face Ole Miss on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. CT. The Commodores will then return home to play host to Mississippi State on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. CT.
