NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt women’s tennis plays host to Murray State and Tennessee State for a Valentine’s Day doubleheader at the Lummis Tennis Center on Friday.
The Dores enter tomorrow over two weeks removed from their last match on Jan. 31. Vanderbilt currently has four players in the ITA national rankings; senior Célia-Belle Mohr and Sophia Webster lead the way with a No. 10 ranking in doubles. The pair’s current top-10 spot is the highest doubles rank either have achieved in their careers. Junior Bridget Stammel sits at No. 35 in singles, along with Mohr at No. 48 and sophomore Valeria Ray at No. 84. Ray comes into Friday the winner of eight straight singles matches, including a 5-0 singles record in dual matches. The streak is the longest of her career thus far.
Murray State has suffered losses in three of its four dual matches to open the spring season. The Racers’ only victory came on Jan. 31 in a 7-0 sweep of Austin Peay. Vandy holds a 3-0 record in the all-time series, with the last match played between the two programs coming in 2015. Each match has resulted in a 4-0 Commodore win.
For Tennessee State, the Tigers make the crosstown trek trailing the Commodores 2-0 all-time. They come into Friday bearing a three match losing skid, including a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Ole Miss on Jan. 19. Tennessee State is 0-14 against SEC teams in its program history.
Vanderbilt (4-1) goes up against Murray State (1-3) in the opening match Friday, with play slated for an 11 a.m start.
