Vandy falls to top-seeded Alabama in final minute

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Vanderbilt fell to No. 3 Alabama 2-1 in the SEC Tournament semifinals Thursday at the Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex.

Fifth-seeded Vanderbilt scored first off a Peyton Cutshall header in the 15th minute. Cutshall scored in both of Vandy’s games at the tournament.

Raegan Kelley provided the service into the box for her 10th assist on the season. Kelley is the seventh Commodore in program history to reach double-digit assists.

Top-seeded Alabama pulled even in the 19th minute and the game remained even at 1-1 until the 89th.

With just 38 seconds left in regulation, an Alabama forward and Vandy defender raced for a ball in the box. Both players went down and the official ruled a penalty kick for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama’s Riley Parker converted the penalty to put the Crimson Tide in front 2-1.

Vanderbilt fell to 11-4-4 on the season while Alabama improved to 18-1-1.

The Commodores now turn their attention to the NCAA Soccer Selection Show which is set for 3 p.m. Monday.
