This Week on West End

Looking ahead to what's on deck for the Commodores this week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.

After three straight wins, Vanderbilt’s soccer team will close the regular season when it hosts Ole Miss at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Dores have moved into second in the SEC East standings and are chasing a double bye in the Southeastern Conference tournament later this month.

The Vanderbilt football team will return to the field at 2:30 p.m. Saturday when it travels to Mississippi State. Vandy fell at home to Ole Miss on Saturday

Here’s more of the happenings around West End this week:

Soccer

Vanderbilt continues to build momentum toward the postseason.

With just one regular-season match to go, the Commodores (4-3, 4-3 SEC) find themselves in third place in the SEC East, six points behind first-place South Carolina and one point behind second-place Tennessee – although the Commodores still can lock up a top-four seed with a positive result Saturday.

Vandy is coming off a 2-0 win at LSU on Friday thanks to goals by Leila Azari and Olivia Simmons. That gave the Dores their third-straight victory.

Head coach Darren Ambrose and staff will recognize 10 student-athletes as seniors Saturday at the Vanderbilt Soccer/Lacrosse Complex at 6 p.m. on SEC Network+. Ole Miss (3-4, 3-4 SEC) comes to Nashville having won two of its last three matches.

Football

Head coach Derek Mason’s team will try to rebound from a 54-21 loss to Ole Miss at home Saturday.

The Commodores (0-4, 0-4 SEC) travel to Mississippi State for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday, a game televised live by the SEC Network. Vanderbilt has faced the Bulldogs (1-4, 1-4 SEC) just 22 times previously with the last matchup coming in 2014.

Under first-year head coach Mike Leach, Mississippi State has dropped four in a row and is scoring 7.5 points per game during that streak.

Men’s golf

Coming off a resounding win at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate Tournament, the Vanderbilt men’s golf team heads to Birmingham, Alabama, this weekend to prepare play in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.

Hosted by the Old Overton Club, Vandy and the other 13 SEC teams will play 54 holes starting Nov. 9 and running through Nov. 10. The event is in its 36th year.

Vanderbilt recently captured the Legends Collegiate at the Vanderbilt Legends Club with a 39-under as a team. Fifth-year senior John Augenstein came in second with a 13-under.

Bowling

It has been a long time since the Vanderbilt bowlers have stepped onto the lanes. That changes this weekend.

Head coach John Williamson’s squad is slated to participate in one of two fall tournaments starting Friday in Ruston, Louisiana, at the LA Tech Invite. The eight-team competition will include many of the top programs in the country.

Vandy, the 2019 national runner-up, has three upperclassmen and four newcomers on the 2020-21 squad.

Women’s golf

The Vanderbilt women’s golf team will continue to build toward the spring with its final tournament of the 2020 fall season.

Head coach Greg Allen’s fivesome will travel to Athens, Georgia, to take part in the 48th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Last time out the Commodores came in ninth at The Ally at Old Waverly in Mississippi.

Men’s tennis

Vanderbilt will be one of three teams competing this weekend at the Four-In-The-Fall on the University of Alabama campus.

The Commodores will join the host Crimson Tide along with LSU and Kentucky for the three-day event beginning Friday. That will mark the final competition of the fall for Vandy.
