This Week on West End

Looking ahead to what's on deck for the Commodores this week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.

The Vanderbilt football team is scheduled to return to the field at 3 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Ole Miss. Vandy has been off since Oct. 10.

After two straight wins, Vanderbilt’s soccer team will head to LSU for a Friday night affair. The Dores have moved into second in the SEC East standings with two matches to go in the regular season.

Here’s more of the happenings around West End this week:

Football

Head coach Derek Mason’s team has been off since Oct. 10 after having to guard against COVID-19-related issues. The Dores also had a scheduled bye week this past Saturday.

Vandy will welcome in an Ole Miss squad that has dropped three in a row since a 42-41 win in overtime against Kentucky on Oct. 3. The Rebels (1-4) are allowing 44.6 points per game.

The Commodores (0-3) will be looking for their first win of the season. Kickoff on Saturday is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will be televised live by the SEC Network.

Soccer

Vanderbilt seems to be clicking at just the right time.

With two regular-season matches to go, the Commodores find themselves in second place in the SEC East, six points behind first-place South Carolina.

Vandy is coming off a 1-0 win over No. 15 Georgia on Sunday thanks to an 88th-minute winner from Haley Hopkins. That gave the Dores (3-3, 3-3 SEC) a second straight one-goal victory.

Head coach Darren Ambrose’s squad now heads to LSU to face the Tigers (0-3-2, 0-3-2 SEC) at 7 p.m. Friday. Vandy will then host Ole Miss for its regular-season finale Nov. 7 before heading to the SEC Tournament.

Cross country

Vanderbilt’s cross country teams will put their best feet forward Friday when they line up for the SEC Championship at 10 a.m at the University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The meet presents an opportunity for seniors Caleb Van Geffen, Edward Harpstead, Gillian Mortimer and Anna Grace Morgan to lead the Commodores in their final team meet of the 2020 fall season. The women’s 6K race is scheduled to begin at 9:05 a.m. while the men will hit the 8K trail at 10 a.m.

Men’s golf

A 13-under opening round by the Commodores on Sunday put them out in front at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee. Vandy will try to hold onto that lead Monday and Tuesday in the all-SEC Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate.

Matthew Riedel had an impressive 66 after one round of play for Vanderbilt.

Women’s tennis

Vanderbilt will host the June Stewart Invitational beginning Friday.

The Commodores will welcome in Auburn, Kentucky and Tennessee as part of the field to compete at the Currey Tennis Center.

Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Friday, 10 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday.

Swimming

Commodore swimming will take part in its second and final meet of the fall season with a trip to Tennessee this weekend.

Vanderbilt will face Tennessee on Friday. Vandy made its 2020 debut earlier this month by competing against Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.
