Looking ahead to what's on deck for the Commodores this week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.

Vanderbilt baseball begins its postseason run as it heads south to Hoover, Alabama, and the SEC Tournament. The Commodores begin play Wednesday in the annual event.

Vandy golf is still alive and well as the men’s team begins its quest for a national title Friday and one of the women’s team’s top competitors shoots for an individual championship in Arizona. Vanderbilt track and field and women’s tennis are each still fighting in the postseason as well.

Here’s more on all the other happenings around West End this week:

Baseball

Vanderbilt ended its regular season by taking 2 of 3 from visiting Kentucky over the weekend and goes into the SEC Tournament as the No. 4 seed.

The Commodores (39-13) begin their postseason at 8 p.m. Wednesday against either Ole Miss or Auburn. Win or loss Vandy will play Thursday – at 1 p.m. or 8 p.m. – in the double-elimination tournament.

Vanderbilt is looking for its 11th 40-win season in the Tim Corbin era.

Men’s golf

Fresh off an NCAA Regional championship, Vanderbilt departs for Arizona this week where it will try to win a national championship at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Vandy goes into the event as SEC champions and winners of the Kingston Springs Regional. The Commodores will play three rounds of stroke play starting Friday and will look to advance to a fourth round of stroke play Monday.

Match play to determine a national champion begins Tuesday.

Women’s tennis

Vanderbilt senior Christina Rosca kept her national championship hopes alive Sunday with a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Orlando, Florida.

Rosca advanced to face Isabella Pfennig of Miami (Florida) at noon CT Monday.

Now with 115 career singles wins, Rosca is alone in third for the most singles victories in a Vandy career. She passed Julie Ditty with Sunday’s win.

Women’s golf

Vanderbilt sophomore Celina Sattlekau was one of 84 individuals to advance to Monday’s final round of stroke play at the NCAA Championships in Arizona.

A sophomore, Sattelkau finished 54 holes at 3-over-par and is tied for 23rd overall. She’s scheduled to tee off at 12:11 p.m. CT and is chasing down Stanford’s Rachel Heck who is 10-under-par for the tournament.

Track and field

Haley Bishop (100 meters, 200 meters), Madison Fuller (100 meters), Taiya Shelby (400 meters) and Grace Jensen (1,500 meters) were each among the 48 qualifiers for the opening rounds of the NCAA Championships along with Vanderbilt’s 4×400 relay which includes Shelby, Fuller, Kaira Brown and Jordan Smith as well as alternate Nicole Anderson.

The four track individuals will each race in the NCAA First Round on May 27. The top 24 will advance to the NCAA quarterfinals on May 29 and the top 12 quarterfinalists will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 9-12. The top 12 from the 4×400 relay will advance on to Oregon.

The NCAA East Regionals begin Jacksonville, Florida, on Thursday.
