Looking ahead to what's on deck for the Commodores this week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.

Both Vanderbilt golf teams deserve some attention this week as each steps into the postseason spotlight.

The Vandy men will host the Kingston Springs Regional beginning Monday at The Golf Club of Tennessee. Thirteen teams, including the Commodores, will battle over three days and 54 holes in hopes of advancing to the NCAA Championships later this month.

Two Vanderbilt women’s golfer, meanwhile, will head to Arizona later this week to compete as individuals at the NCAA Championships in Arizona.

On the diamond, Vandy baseball will pay tribute to its seniors as it rounds out the regular season home schedule with four games in five days.

Here’s more on all the other happenings around West End this week:

Men’s golf

The Golf Club of Tennessee and Kingston Springs were named an NCAA Regional site for 2021 and Vanderbilt will be afforded the opportunity to play in its own backyard starting Monday.

Tabbed the No. 3 seed in the field of 13 teams, Vandy will look to finish among the top five teams scores after three days and 54 holes of golf for the right to advance to Scottsdale, Arizona, and the NCAA Championships. The Commodores are coming off an SEC championship in April and are led by SEC Coach of the Year Scott Limbaugh and All-SEC First Team selection William Moll.

The Kingston Springs Regional is open to the public and the Dores are scheduled to be first off the No. 1 tee at 7:30 a.m. Monday

Women’s golf

While Vanderbilt came up just short as a team in the recent Columbus Regional in Ohio, sophomore Celina Sattelkau and senior Louise Yu played exceptionally enough to earn bids as individuals into the field of 24 teams and 10 other individuals.

Play begins Friday at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The championship format consists of all 24 teams and 12 individuals completing 54 holes of stroke play. The top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will compete for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion.

The top eight teams then compete in match play for the team national championship.

Baseball

After dropping 2 of 3 on the road at Ole Miss over the weekend, Vanderbilt returns home to close out the regular season with games, the final three of which are vitally important to the race for an SEC East Division title and the overall No. 1 seed at the SEC Tournament later this month.

Vandy (36-12, 17-9 SEC) starts the week by hosting Florida International at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Panthers (20-30) split four games at Middle Tennessee over the weekend and will stick around the area to play at Hawkins Field.

Starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the Commodores welcome in Kentucky for the final SEC series of the season. The Wildcats (27-20, 11-16 SEC), who host Tennessee Tech on Tuesday, have dropped five in a row overall and five straight league games.

Vanderbilt begins the week 1/2-game behind Tennessee in the SEC East and 1 1/2-games back of Arkansas for the best record in conference play.
